THE BIBLE IS GOD’S WORD
The PDF of this Lesson...
With a Game (in Various PDFs), the Quiz, and Verses to Memorize
You probably have many books in your home and school. Books are fun to read. Some help us to learn about the world around us. Others tell us stories that make us laugh or cry. The most wonderful book of all is the Bible. It is special because it is God’s message to us. God, our Creator, wants us to know Him and the right way to live. He loves us very much and wants us to live with Him forever.
God used about 40 different men, over a period of 1600 years, to write the Bible. God guided what they wrote so that they put down exactly what He wanted. Therefore, the Bible is completely true and without mistake.
The Bible is made up of 66 books, divided into two parts - the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament has 39 books and was written BEFORE Jesus came to earth. Its’ books tell us how the world began and the history of God’s people. The New Testament has 27 books that tell about Jesus’ life on earth and the beginning of the Church. Parts of the Bible even tell us what will happen in the future.
This lesson will tell us several things that the Bible is like:
THE BIBLE IS LIKE:
Isn’t it exciting to get a letter or card in the mail? What would happen if your mom said, “Something came in the mail for you today.” What would you do? Go watch TV or play a video game? No. You would run to the table and open your letter and read it.
A LETTER
The Bible is like a love letter from God to you. It is a BIG letter and it would be really hard to read it all at one time. God wants us to read a little each day so we will get to know Him and to know better how to live. Have you read any of God’s letter?
Have you ever gone on a long trip to visit a relative or for a vacation? If you did, you Dad or Mom probably had to look at a map to see what was the best way to get there.
A MAP
The Bible is like a map in that it shows us how to get to Heaven. While there may be several ways to your Grandparent’s house, there is only ONE way to Heaven. You can’t get to Heaven by being good or by going to church. The only way is Jesus. He is the only One Who can forgive you of your sins and make you fit for Heaven. You must Admit that you are a sinner, Believe that Jesus died in your place, and Commit your life to Him.
Jesus said, “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life: no man comes to the Father (gets into Heaven), but by Me.” John 14:6.
Have you ever gone for a walk in the dark? Did you have a flashlight? That made the going much easier. The Bible is like a light in that it shows us the way to go. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
A LIGHT
Sometimes in life we aren’t sure what to do. The Bible guides our lives so that we may live happy and holy lives. Without it, we can easily get lost or hurt.
What do newborn babies eat? Do they eat steak and potatoes? No, their bodies can’t handle solid food. Instead God made milk so that babies can grow to be strong physically.
MILK
We have a spiritual “body” as well. The spiritual part of us is that part that relates to God. If we are strong spiritually, then we can have victory over sin and serve God better. The Bible is like milk in that by reading it we make our spiritual “body” stronger. Many people are spiritually weak because they spend hours watching TV or reading magazines, but never open their Bibles. Do you want to be spiritually strong? Read God’s Word!
A MIRROR
The Bible is also like a mirror. Before you go out the door to school you probably look into a mirror to make sure that your hair is combed, and your face is clean. If something is out of place, you take time to fix it.
When you read the Bible, it shows you the things in your life that need to be fixed. The book of James tells us that if the Bible shows us where we are wrong, we are foolish not to make it right, just as we would be if we walked out of the door with messy hair or food on our face.
A SWORD
Finally, the Bible is like a sword. We have a mighty enemy, Satan. He wants us to disobey God and to become a slave to sin. God has given us the Bible to be a weapon to fight against Satan’s attacks. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.”
If you memorize verses from the Bible, then they will come back to you when Satan whispers in your ear to tempt you to sin. God will use His Word to give you VICTORY!
The Bible is a wonderful book, unlike any other. God wants you to read it and obey it so that you will have joy and peace in your life. If you don’t read it and apply it to your life it will do you NO good. Read a few verses today, asking God to help you understand it.
