After the time of the Judges, Israel called out for a king. They rejected God as their king and wanted a human king like the nations around them. God granted their wish in King Saul. On the outside he looked like a king, but in his heart, he served himself, not God.

When God rejected Saul as king, He chose David, a young shepherd. God knew that David had a heart to follow Him. The Bible even calls David “a man after God’s own heart” in Acts 13:22.

David then chose Solomon to be king after his death. He knew that Solomon loved the Lord and hoped he would make a good king. Although Solomon started out well, he let his wives and his riches pull him away from God.

Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, took over after his father died, but he was not on God’s side. He was a harsh king and under him the people rebelled. The kingdom split in two…the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Israel had 19 evil kings before they were conquered by the enemy. Judah had 20 kings, eight of which followed God. However, their disobedience eventually led to their captivity also.

During his time, very few people chose to be on the Lord’s side. Elijah was one man that did. Even though his life was in danger, he stood up for God against the evil King Ahab, possibly the worst king of them all.

The Bible says in Matthew 12:30, that you are either on the Lord’s side or you are against Him. There is no in between.

God loves us with an everlasting love. He proved that when He sent His Son to die in our place. He wants the very best for us, but He does not force us to love Him. We have a choice to love and serve God or to live our life our own way. Each choice has an end result. We choose God and have eternal life in Heaven, or we choose our own way and spend eternity separated from God in Hell.
